US stocks waver as worse-than-expected jobless claims nullify reopening hopes

US stocks fluctuated on Wednesday as a surprise jump in weekly jobless claims stifled recovery enthusiasm.
New claims for unemployment benefits rose to an unadjusted 778,000 for the week that ended Saturday. Economists expected a reading of 730,000.
The Dow opened just above 30,000 after breaking through the level in Tuesday trading before moving lower.
Oil prices ticked higher on lasting hopes for a demand rebound. West Texas Intermediate crude jumped as much as 1.8%, to $45.72 per barrel.

Initial jobless claims rose again last week

The number of workers filing initial claims for unemployment benefits rose by 30,00 to 778,000 in the week ending Nov. 21, the U.S. Labor Department reported Wednesday. The previous week's figure, meanwhile, was also revised upward by 6,000, from 742,000 to 748,000.
The latest data suggest the economy is continuing to weaken, reversing signs in early autumn that a recovery was under way.
