Initial jobless claims remain near historic highs

More than 1.3 million workers filed initial claims for unemployment benefits in the week ending July 4, the U.S. Labor Department said Thursday, down only slightly from the previous week's tally. In New York, the number filing initial claims was up from the previous week.
The Labor Department reported that 1.314 million workers filed initial claims, down 99,000 from 1.413 million, which had been revised downward from 1.427 million initially reported.
