MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jason Lewis was rushed into emergency surgery Monday for a severe internal hernia, just eight days before the election, his campaign announced.
The condition is life-threatening if not treated quickly, the campaign said in a statement. An internal hernia is a bulge or protrusion of an organ - often the bowel into the abdomen. It can cause an obstruction or other problems.

Minnesota Republican Jason Lewis, the party's nominee for Senate, was rushed into emergency surgery Monday to fix a severe internal hernia, his campaign announced in a statement.
Lewis, a former one-term congressman, is running against Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, who is running for a full term after winning a special election in 2018. MINNEAPOLIS - Jason Lewis, the former Republican congressman and current Senate candidate, underwent emergency surgery Monday morning, his campaign says.
According to a statement, Lewis went to an emergency room early Monday morning after experiencing stomach pain. Doctors determined he was suffering from a severe internal hernia, which can be life-threatening if not dealt with quickly.
Lewis was rushed into surgery. His campaign staff says he was in good spirits and optimistic before the operation.
