U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said he'll leave the agency Jan. 20, eliminating the possibility of a holdover Republican majority at the agency that could have temporarily stymied changes sought by the incoming Biden administration.
Since being elevated to the chairmanship by President Donald Trump in 2017, Pai, a Republican, has led the commission in dismantling net neutrality regulations and pushed for fast wireless broadband service.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican, says he is leaving the telecommunications regulator on Inauguration Day.
President-elect Joe Biden will choose a new Democratic head for the agency. A new administration typically picks a new chairman.
Pai has presided over a contentious FCC over the last four years. He undid net neutrality rules that barred internet service providers like Comcast and AT&T from favoring some types of online traffic over others in 2017 and championed other deregulatory efforts. Federal Communications Commission Chair Ajit Pai said on Monday he would step down from the agency in January, leaving office in the wake of President Donald Trump's reelection defeat.
His departure will create an opening for the incoming Biden administration to shape its own Democratic majority atop the five-member regulatory body following Inauguration Day. Pai, whom Trump tapped to lead the FCC in January 2017, will resign from his post on Jan. 20, the day President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in.
