The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating a spate of lung illnesses tied to vaping , or using e-cigarettes.
The illnesses have so far claimed 39 lives. There have been 2.051 reported cases of lung diseases in the US since June.
The CDC said it has narrowed in on a culprit for the first time: Vitamin E acetate.

Vitamin E acetate, in combination with THC, may be to blame for a national outbreak of e-cigarette-related lung injuries that's linked to dozens of deaths, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, said she would characterize it as a breakthrough in the agency's investigation, although more tests are necessary.
“These new findings are significant,” Schuchat said during a press briefing on Friday. “We have a strong culprit.”

Officials believe vitamin E oil is playing a pivotal role in the outbreak of vaping-related lung illnesses, after 39 deaths

Investigators said vitamin E acetate, an ingredient found in canola, soy, and corn oil, appears to be playing a pivotal role in the spate of vaping-related lung illnesses during a call with reporters on Friday.
At latest count, there have been 39 deaths and 2,051 confirmed and probable cases of illness across the US.
"These findings provide direct evidence of vitamin E acetate at the primary site of injury," the officials wrote in their report.
