Melrose police arrest alleged car burglar by tracking his footprints in the snow

A man accused of breaking into cars in Melrose early Tuesday was foiled by his own footprints after briefly eluding police by running through yards and jumping a fence.
Melrose Police Officer Richard Cooney responded to the intersection of Emerson Street and Orient Avenue at 3:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a man walking down driveways and looking into the windows of parked cars, police said.
As Cooney searched the area and approached the dead end of Orient Place, he saw a man matching the suspect's description standing near a parked car, who immediately fled through the backyard of a nearby home when he saw Cooney's cruiser and scaled a fence to get away, police said.
Cooney went back to his cruiser in an attempt to locate the suspect, but ultimately came up short.
However, police said Cooney returned to where he initially saw the suspect and tracked the footprints he left in the snow through multiple yards, along the sidewalk and finally down the driveway of a home of Harding Road, until he found the...
