Patriots remember Pete Frates: ‘I think he's a hero, honestly'

FOXBORO - Two days out from Sunday's kickoff in Cincinnati, Tom Brady and Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater took time from their preparation to reflect on the death of Pete Frates .
Frates, the inspirational ALS patient behind the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” passed away Monday after a seven-year battle with the disease. His funeral was held Friday morning. Through the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” Frates helped raise more than $200 million and left an indelible mark on his native Massachusetts.
“He just had a great impact, and I think took a really tough situation and turned it into a great positive for people and brought great awareness to a tremendous cause,” Brady said. “And he's resting peacefully now, and we wish his family the best.”
A degenerative nerve disease that eventually leads to total paralysis, Frates was first diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012. A cure has not yet been found. Frates grew up in Beverly, attended nearby St. John's Prep and played baseball at Boston...
