I'm Safe, But Not Yet Free

Leer en español. In the summer of 2008, I got a warning the Mexican military was about to ambush me. The warning came from a local schoolteacher in the northern town of La Ascensión. I wasted no time wondering if it was real. In Mexico, to be a journalist on the wrong side of the authorities is not a safe place to be. In the middle of the night, I fled with my teenage son, Oscar. We headed for a ranch about 17 miles from our home in Chihuahua called “La Virgencita”-the little Virgin-where they gave us shelter. I found it hard to believe that we had left our home forever. But our priority was to survive. The only way I could see was to claim political asylum in the United States. That was our shot at life. Two days later, I decided to travel through the desert to get to the border checkpoint 38 miles away at Antelope Wells, N.M.
