Teachers take to the picket lines in Los Angeles

The president of the National Education Association said that as a strike begins today in Los Angeles , teachers are optimistic their action will draw attention on the plight of public schools - just like in several red states last spring. “When we saw that redfored wave starting in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona last year, they took it to the streets, and the public then started to pay attention to what had been happening for years in their public school," Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the nation's largest labor union, told MSNBC in an interview that aired before the school day started. Before then, she said the problem "was invisible, it was quiet, and then they made noise and they got something better for those kids." "That's what we have to hope will happen here, that the parents and the public will stand beside us," she said.
