White House looks to jam Democrats on border cash

White House officials are pushing Capitol Hill Republicans to take an all-or-nothing approach to government funding this fall - daring Democrats to shut down the government rather than fund the border wall. Shahira Knight, President Donald Trump's top Hill aide, told a private gathering this week that Republicans should draft one giant spending package in the lame-duck Congress that includes wall funding, according to two sources familiar with the conversations. That package would also include emergency dollars for this year's deadly wildfires and hurricanes, according to a senior GOP aide. It's considered the “first-choice plan” among House GOP leaders, the aide said. The White House tactic would try to force Democrats to choose between funding the wall and shutting down more than a dozen agencies, including Homeland Security, just days before Christmas. GOP lawmakers could also hit Democrats for voting against disaster aid amid an ongoing wildfire crisis in California, where at least 48 people have died....
