The economy added 4.8 million jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent as states reopened, the Labor Department reported in a survey taken mid-month before a resurgence of the coronavirus led to new shutdowns.
The reality of the job market is now likely far bleaker. Americans filed 1.4 million new applications for unemployment benefits last week, the department reported.
