Germany's Christian Democratic Union has elected a new chairman, picking centrist politician Armin Laschet, the premier of Germany's most populous state North Rhine-Westphalia, as its new leader.
The first-ever digital election was held by CDU on Saturday, with Laschet defeating his main contender, hardliner conservative Friedrich Merz, in a runoff ballot.
