The number of laid-off workers seeking unemployment benefits remained stuck at 1.3 million last week, an historically high level that indicates many companies are still cutting jobs as the viral outbreak intensifies.
The elevated level of applications for jobless aid is occurring as new confirmed cases of coronavirus are spiking across much of the Sunbelt, threatening to weaken the economic recovery. Case counts are rising in 40 states and 22 states have either paused or reversed their efforts to reopen their economies, according to Bank of America.

US stocks declined on Thursday after weekly jobless claims data came in higher than expectations, falling the least since March on a week-over-week basis.
Filings for unemployment benefits reached 1.3 million in the week ended Saturday, landing above the 1.25 million estimate and falling just 10,000 from the previous reading.
Twitter dragged on the Nasdaq composite following Wednesday afternoon's bitcoin-hacker scandal .
Oil futures dropped, with West Texas Intermediate crude falling as much as 1.5%, to $40.60 per barrel.

Jobless claims fell at state, national levels last week

The number of workers filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending July 11 fell by 10,000 to 1.3 million nationwide, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday morning, down from 1.31 0 million the week before. That figure, in turn had been revised downward by 4,000 from 1.314 million.
In New York, 91,583 workers filed initial claims, 2,157 fewer than the previous week when 93,740 workers sought benefits.
