Another of President Donald Trump's prospects for an important position fell through Tuesday, as Trump announced he'd be replacing Patrick Shanahan as acting defense secretary. Shanahan had been serving in the role since January, though Trump only nominated him for it in May.
Shanahan's withdrawal from consideration followed press reports that the FBI was investigating domestic abuse concerns from his past - raising questions as to how he was serving in such lofty positions in the first place.

Well, that was fast.
Just over a month after saying he would nominate Patrick Shanahan as defense secretary, President Donald Trump on Tuesday tweeted that he would not do so, leaving the United States without a defense secretary for the longest stretch in the country's history.
In his signature style, the president thanked Shanahan for his service and showed him the door, while naming Mark Esper, the current secretary of the army, as his choice to head the Pentagon:

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan is withdrawing his nomination to lead the Pentagon.
The abrupt announcement came in a tweet from the president, who said Shanahan had done "a wonderful job" but would step aside to "devote more time to his family."
The president added that the Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, will be the new acting secretary.
"I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!" Trump said in a second tweet on the subject.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has decided to pull out from the nomination process to become full-time Defense Secretary after a rocky six-month tenure at the Pentagon.
