WASHINGTON - Fort Bragg would become Fort Liberty. Fort Gordon would be Fort Eisenhower. And, for the first time, Army bases would be named after Black soldiers and women. An independent commission on Tuesday recommended new names for nine Army posts that now commemorate Confederate officers.
The recommendations are the latest step in a broader effort by the military to confront racial injustice, most recently in the aftermath of the May 2020 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

A Pentagon commission announced new names for nine bases currently named for Confederate figures.
The suggestions would name bases after Black soldiers and women soldiers for the first time.

The Naming Commission, a panel created by Congress last year to oversee the removal of Confederate names from Defense Department property, has recommended nine new names for Army bases that commemorate Civil War rebel leaders.
“The Naming Commission sought to find names that would be inspirational to the Soldiers and civilians who serve on our Army posts, and to the communities who support them,” said retired Navy Adm. Michelle Howard, the commission's chair, in a statement on Tuesday.
