U.S. Senate committee had already targeted prison canteen accounts

Packed prison canteen accounts were ripped as an “outrage” at a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing months ago as the new head of the Board of Prisons was new to the job.
But just this week a Department of Justice memo urged prosecutors nationwide to push harder for restitution from notorious convicts from marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, rapper R. Kelly and gymnast abuser Larry Nassar.
“Either you run the agency or the agency runs you,” warned Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley to BOP Director Colette Peters in September.
