Poitras & James: Get Mass. beauty police out of salon workers' hair

Hairstylists sometimes work magic, but not with scissors or harsh chemicals. The job does not involve cutting, dying, bleaching or perming. Yet Massachusetts hairstylists must pay for classes in all these topics anyway.
The mandatory schooling also includes instruction in painting nails, shaping eyebrows, applying makeup, gluing on eyelash extensions, giving facials and using hot wax to remove body hair. Hairstylists do none of these things, but they must spend 1,000 hours in school learning all these skills before they can collect their first paycheck in Massachusetts.
