HANDGUNS FOR THE HERRING: These days, police dispose of confiscated and otherwise unwanted firearms by sending them off to be scrapped for metal. Back in the day, guns were sent to sleep with the fishes - literally. When this July 1, 1947, photo was taken, Charles P. Van Amburg, Massachusetts State Police and firearms expert; Trooper Joseph M. Lane ; Acting Capt. James J. Crowley, Boston Police Department; and Trooper William F. Brady, left to right, look over the state police collection of 1,500 guns used in crimes committed in the commonwealth, which was dropped into the sea off Swampscott.
