The decline of local journalism is directly endangering American democracy: Civic engagement is weakening, political polarization is increasing, and public trust in news and information is plummeting.
Between 2005 and 2020, roughly one-quarter of local newspapers closed their doors, according to data released by The Washington Post. By 2020, only one-third of U.S. counties had a daily local paper - a number that has likely decreased even further since this data was collected, given the pandemic-induced economic hardships for local news outlets.
