Medvedev moves on to face tough American test

The world number one booked a quarterfinal spot at the Cincinnati Masters with victory over Denis Shapovalov
Russia's Daniil Medvedev is into the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters after a straight-sets victory over Denis Shapovalov of Canada on Thursday. Medvedev will face American Taylor Fritz in the next round of the prestigious ATP hard court event.
Rafael Nadal's second-round exit in Cincinnati earlier this week meant that Medvedev's status as world number one was already secure until the US Open, where he will defend his title when the action begins in New York at the end of August.
But Medvedev, 26, will aim to head to Flushing Meadows on a high, and secured victory against Shapovalov 7-5 7-5 in a contest spanning one hour, 45 minutes.
Medvedev secured the first break of serve in game three of the opening set, although Shapovalov later broke back to level the set at 4-4.
